Introduction

Bridgend is located midway between Cardiff and Swansea as a town it has a long and chequered history, the first recorded establishment goes back to the early 1300’s. Since then it has grown in size to become one of the largest towns in South Wales.

It is situated on the main transport route between Wales and London with good rail, road and sea links with the rest of the UK.

A view of Bridgend Town about 1922

Bridgend has other advantages which make it suitable as an industrial site, it has an ample supply of water, electricity, and gas, but above all else in the 1930’s it had a large un-employed population within commuting distance of the town.

A fact reported in the Friday 27th of July 1934 issue of the Glamorgan Gazette from a meeting of the then Bridgend Urban District Council when the then Chairman made a prophetic suggestion that Bridgend would be an ideal site for the location of an arms factory. In fact it was a prime location for the future war effort, as the following facts illustrate. (Reference 1.)
